Karta Mobile At BlackBerry DevCon 2010

Filed under: blackberry — admin @ 8:54 pm

Every year the BlackBerry developer community gathers for a week-long conference to discuss the leading-edge of BlackBerry technology as well as to catch a glimpse of the future of the BlackBerry platform. For the third year in a row, Karta Mobile was among the proud attendees, and we were particularly thrilled to have been there during one of the most exciting announcements ever made at DevCon.

During the conference keynote to DevCon 2010 at the Moscone Center in downtown San Francisco, Mike Lazaridis, the Co-CEO of RIM unveiled the next frontier for the BlackBerry platform - the BlackBerry PlayBook. Rumours about a BlackBerry tablet had been swirling around for some time leading up to the conference, from sites like biygeniusreports.com to mainstream media, so it wasn’t entirely a surprise for many there.

While a lot can be said about the PlayBook’s fascinating hardware - the dual core 1GHz processor, 1GB RAM, 1080p HD video - what we found most fascinating is the ability to pair a PlayBook to a connected BlackBerry. The pairing will be secure and done via Bluetooth, essentially empowering a PlayBook to become an extension to your BlackBerry. In addition to making email attachments instantly viewable on a larger screen, the PlayBook will no doubt enable a new class of mobile applications based on this PlayBook - BlackBerry pairing. One thing for sure, we are all very excited to port Viira to the PlayBook as soon as the device becomes available!

  1. Is it possible for you guys to provide an update as to the timing of the Playbook add-on? I, too, am very excited to have you port Viira to the Playbook. I sit here, Playbook in hand, wishing it were so already.

  2. The Playbook version of Viira is on top of our to-do list, so stay tuned! I can’t provide firm dates at this point though because we are waiting on RIM to make key development tools available which they haven’t yet.

We hope it won’t take too long, so you should expect an announcement soon.

  3. I agree with Sam. I am curious for an update on your Playbook porting of the great Viira Mobile app, which I already love on my phone and computer. Any timeline yet?

  4. Steve, Viira on the Playbook is right on top of our to-do list. We are currently waiting on RIM to provide us with key development tools in order to make the Playbook version of Viira possible. RIM has promised to deliver those tools “this summer” so barring any delays in their schedule we should be releasing Viira for playbook shortly thereafter.

We don’t have a firm ETA at this point though our hope is to have something out by the end of summer. Stay tuned!
