Filed under: blackberry, getting things done, gtd, outlook — Tags: , , — dev @ 10:07 am

In our ongoing effort to continuously enhance the Viira Outlook Suite and solidify its position as the ultimate GTD solution for Outlook and BlackBerry, we have released another update to both the Outlook plugin and BlackBerry client.

Delegate, Send Feedback

Following up from the previous update, the new version 0.9.8 adds a few new capabilities to help you get things done:

  • Delegate. You can now delegate projects and contexts from the Outlook plugin as well as the BlackBerry client. Simply select “Delegate” from the BlackBerry context menu as well as from the “More Options” dropdown meny in the Outlook plugin.
  • Support for MS Outlook 2003. We are constantly striving to make the Viira Outlook Suite available on as many configurations as possible, and are happy to report that Outlook 2003 is now officially supported.
  • Feedback. We love hearing from you and your feedback is crucial in helping us decide what to build next. The Outlook plugin now offers a convenient way for you to send us your thoughts and suggestions for improvement - directly from the Viira Outlook Suite.

Viira Outlook Suite Beta 0.9.7 Released

Filed under: Viira, getting things done, gtd, outlook — Tags: , , — dev @ 5:28 pm

Just a quick note to let you know that we have released an update to the Viira Outlook Suite.

The newly released beta version 0.9.7 contains several improvement and additions to both the Outlook plugin and the BlackBerry client such as enhanced stability, support for OS 4.5 and the new Refresh button.

Download the Viira Outlook Suite Beta

Here is what is new in the Viira Outlook Suite Beta 0.9.7:

  • Stability improvments.  We have made the Viira Outlook Suite more robust to eliminate Outlook error popups.
  • Refresh. Particularly useful in a BES+Exchange setup, the new Refresh button in the Outlook plugin lets you quickly reload all data and display any new tasks, projects or contexts that have been pushed over-the-air from the Viira Outlook Suite BlackBerry client.
  • Support for OS 4.5. We heard from a few of you still using (and loving) your trusted 8800- and 8300-series devices. So we pulled a few tricks and made the Viira Outlook Suite BlackBerry client work on OS 4.5.
  • Fixes to day tasks. We fixed an issue which prevented day tasks from synchronizing properly in the case where BES, Exchange or Outlook use non-default locale settings.
  • Delete All Completed. You can now delete all completed tasks from the Outlook plugin by selecting “Delete All Completed” available through the “More Options” menu.
  • The Viira Log. The Viira Outlook Suite plugin now has a log screen (available from the new “More Options” button) which traps all abnormal events for easy reporting back to our support team.

Thank you again for participating in our Beta program!

Live From WES 2010: BlackBerry 9650, Pearl 9100 3G, OS 6.0 Announced

Every year Research In Motion hosts the Wireless Enterprise Symposium, a.k.a. WES to bring together companies from the BlackBerry ecosystem and share the vision of the BlackBerry platform and brand going forward. As a new member of the BlackBerry Alliance, this is our first year at WES and we are very excited to be here and be amongst the first ones to hear about key announcements.

BlackBerry WES 2010 Conference

To kick of WES 2010, RIM officially announced the BlackBerry Bold 9650 which confirmed many rumors that have been circulating around. A CDMA-based worldphone with built-in Wi-Fi, GPS, double the flash memory of the Bold 9700 and a 3.2MP auto-focus camera with video recording capabilities, the BlackBerry Bold 9650 is a truly a “no compromise” smartphone, as RIM’s Co-CEO Mike Lazaridis put it.

No firm announcements on the availability of the Bold 9560 have been made by carriers yet, though we hope it happens sooner rather than later.

Also announced was the BlackBerry Pearl 3G. With its slick, stylish looks, a compact form factor and support for 3G, this BlackBerry would have easily been the BlackBerry that we would have gone for had we not set our minds on the 9650 already.

Telus and Rogers are the first carriers to announce the addition of the Pearl 9100 to their lineup, with Telus promising a availability in May and priced at $29.99 with a plan (Telus press release here). Verizon, AT&T and others are expected to follow suit shortly thereafter.

Another big announcement today was the upcoming release of OS 6.0 You can check out the preview video below. All in all, it was a very exciting day in the BlackBerry community, and we will provide more details if any other major announcements get made during the remainder of WES 2010.

Karta Mobile Live From The BlackBerry Developer Conference

Filed under: Viira, blackberry — Tags: — admin @ 12:18 am

Over the past week the Karta Mobile team has been busy gleaning deeper insight into the BlackBerry platform directly from the people in RIM themselves at the second annual BlackBerry Developer Conference in San Francisco, California.

The conference has been chock full of important announcements for the BlackBerry developer community and has been covered all across the blogosphere (here, here and here).  It suffices to say that we are all very excited to harness a lot of the innovation, new technologies and device APIs to make Viira and even better, more engaging and comprehensive GTD system for BlackBerry smartphones.

RIM Co-CEO Jim Balsillie Addressing BlackBerry Developers

We took notes on new technologies, best practices and ideas and even engaged in a series of round table discussions with key RIM decision makers on how to best grow the app ecosystem on the BlackBerry. It felt great knowing that our gripes, recommendations and two cents are actually making an impact on the way the BlackBerry platform is evolving.

Yes, unlike other fruit companies, RIM listens.

All-in-all, it has been a spectacular event and we are all coming back energized and thrilled about what the future of the BlackBerry platform holds in store for everyone - for developers and consumers alike.

Viira 2.0 Released: Get More Done With Your BlackBerry

Today has been a day of big announcements in the BlackBerry world. On the first day of the 2009 BlackBerry Developer Conference, RIM announced a slew of new technologies, APIs and partnerships designed to make even richer and more powerful applications a possibility on the BlackBerry platform.

Against this backdrop, we are very excited to be making our own big announcement: the public availabiity of Viira 2.0. Viira 2.0 contains many game-changing improvements that we are delighted to be bringing to you because we know that they will help you do even more with your BlackBerry and help you get things done in your day-to-day life.

Without further ado, here are the key new features in Viira 2.0:

  • Next Actions. You can select the next task that needs addressing for any given project, context, in Tasks View and even for a particular day. Simply use the VolumeUp key to promote any of tasks for the project, context or day to the top position
  • Email Tasks. Create a task from incoming messages so that you never forget to reply to important emails. Instantly add it to your trusted GTD system by classifying it by project, context or day. The email task will contain an embedded preview of the email to remind you what the email was all about.
  • Priorities. Organize the task order for any project, context and day. Use the VolumeUp and VolumeDown key to specify which tasks come ahead of others.
  • Overdue Tasks Display. A new area in the Day View displays in red tasks from previous days that have not been completed yet.
  • Multiple Calendar Support. A unique, Viira-only feature is the inclusion of appointments to your GTD organizational system. Viira 2.0 seamlessly integrates with all calendar accounts on your BlackBerry (BlackBerries maintain one calendar for each configured email address) and appointments from all calendars will appear in your Day View.

We always provide a free trial, and Viira 2.0 is not an exception. For those of you who purchased Viira 1.x, Viira 2.0 will optionally import your Viira 1.x data when launched for the first time as well.

Buyers of the previous version also get special upgrade pricing - a tradition that we will continue with future releases. Buyers of Viira 1.x can buy an upgrade for $19.99.

So give Viira 2.0 a try and see for yourself what it can bring to your day-to-day life!

Viira 1.3 Released

Filed under: Viira, blackberry, gtd — Tags: , — admin @ 6:50 pm

We are glad to announce the immediate availability of Viira 1.3. This release is largely made of various suggestions that many of you passed along.

With many thanks to all of you that dropped us a line telling us what features you would like to see, here is what is new in Viira 1.3:

  • Track project-less and context-less tasks. Project and Context Views now provide an easy way to locate tasks without a project or a context and prevent these tasks from “slipping through the cracks”. Simply select <No Project> and <No Context> in Projects View and Contexts View and all tasks without a project or context assigned to them will be displayed, respectively. (Thanks Sean for suggesting this one!)
  • Start in Last View Used . A new setting available through Viira’s options lets you start Viira in the last used view, making it easier to return to where you left things off.
  • BlackBerry Storm support. As the momentum behind the BlackBerry Storm adoption grows we are pleased to the Storm to the list of supported devices. Long-time owners of and recent upgraders to the BlackBerry Storm can take full advantage of the device’s unique capabilities like the touch screen and orientation sensitivity to get things done on the go with Viira.
  • Performance enhancements. An engineering optimization put in place in Viira 1.3 drastically boosts the speed with which appointments stay in sync with the native BlackBerry calendar, making it possible to integrate a large number of appointments in your GTD system. (thanks Rajesh for helping us through this one)
  • Appointments sorted chronologically. Day View now lists all appointments in chronological order, making it easier to get a quick and intuitive glance of what lies ahead for any given day.
  • Free trial limits raised. The Viira 1.3 Free Trial comes with raised limits on the number of projects, contexts and tasks.

As usual, Viira 1.3 comes as a free upgrade to all buyers of the full version. To get upgrade Over-The-Air (OTA) simply point your BlackBerry to our mobile site Alternatively buyers can log in to our site and download the ZIPed installer and install.

A free trial of Viira 1.3 is also available.

In our continuous effort to make more things possible on BlackBerry devices, we are proud to announce the availability of the Viira BlackBerry site As we constantly improve Viira’s feature set and publish new updates we wanted to make getting the latest version easy - and doable right from your BlackBerry.

Through the mobile site you can download the latest version of Viira Over-The-Air (OTA): with a single click and straight onto your device. Just log in with the same username and password you entered when registering for the free trial, and you will be brought to a page with the OTA links available to you.

Buyers of the full version can also use the BlackBerry site to get updates of the full version of Viira. We have tried to keep the site’s design minimal and not overdo the graphics for those of you on limited data plans or sub-3G network connectivity.

Here are some screenshots of the mobile site taken from our BlackBerry Pearl Flip 8220 with the help of this great screen capture tool for BlackBerries called CaptureIt.

Viira 1.2 Released

Filed under: Viira, blackberry, gtd — Tags: , — admin @ 11:22 am

We are pleased to announce the immediate availability of Viira 1.2. Since we released Viira 1.1 we heard many positive words (thank you all!) and received many great feature suggestions, so we decided to make many of them reality in the 1.2 release.

Here is what’s new in Viira 1.2:

  • Alphabetically sorted projects and contexts. (Thanks Greg for making us see the light on this one!) In addition to the visual convenience of being able to quickly zero in on a project or context this feature has the added benefit of “clustering” projects and contexts with similar names together. For example, all my projects that start with “Viira”, e.g. “Viira Features”, “Viira Suggestions” etc. all appear one after the other.
  • Quick search for projects/contexts. Just press the first letter of the project or context you are looking for and the project or context starting with this letter will be highlighted. Works both in Project View, Context View as well as in the drop-down combo boxes in the Task and Appointment edit screen. Makes finding the project or context you are looking for a whole lot quicker!
  • Support for recurring appointments and events. All BlackBerry Calendar appointments and events with recurrence associated with them now appear in Day View and can be assigned a project or context, just like any task or appointment in Viira. More on Viira’s recurring appointments and how to best take advantage of them is coming up in a follow-on post.
  • Backup/restore capabilities.  All of Viira’s data now gets automatically backed up and restored when the entire device is backed up and restored, thus giving a peace of mind to the many of you counting on Viira day-in and day-out to get things done. A post on how to backup/restore Viira’s data for those that haven’t done a device backup/restore before is coming soon. Backup/restore is available on the full version of Viira.
  • Device migration support. Thinking of upgrading to a newer BlackBerry model but have a lot of Viira data on the older device? Buyers of the full version can now migrate their Viira data from one BlackBerry to another, ensuring data continuity between device upgrades. (more on this to follow in a separate device migration how-to).
  • Support for latest BlackBerry models. Release 1.2 makes sure that Viira works and looks great on the BlackBerry Pearl 8220 and the BlackBerry Curve 8900.
  • Auto-capitalization of first letter of project, context, task and appointment names. Just makes things look a whole lot nicer!

As always, release 1.2 comes as a free update to all buyers of the full version of Viira. Buyers can get the update by pointing their BlackBerries to the Viira mobile site at or by logging in to our main site and downloading the ZIPed installer from there.

A free trial of Viira 1.2 is available as well.

GTD and Discipline

Getting Things Done is a wonderful organizational system. There are many tools, constructs and best practices out there that help us leverage it to its full potential. But when we dig through and absorb all the technical details of implementing GTD in our lives one very important ingredient is often overlooked: discipline.

It takes discipline to internalize and use the GTD principles day in and day out, it takes discipline to make a point of always using your GTD system, and most of all it takes discipline to bring your in basket to empty on a regular basis.

It is lack of discipline that can stand in the way of getting things done. A great article on 3by9
by Tyme White talks about how discipline can be particularly important for tackling a certain kind of tricky to-do items: those that need to get done but towards which we feel some internal resistance. And GTDWannabe writes about periodically encountering friction with and even abandoning your own GTD system and some thoughts on how to handle that.

In a way, discipline is the glue that keeps it all together. Personally, I am relying heavily on my BlackBerry for help in this department. I naturally carry my BlackBerry with me wherever I go and with Viira on it all the time, sometimes just looking at the device serves as a conscious (or subconscious) reminder that I have set to do a certain number of things that day. In a way, it is a subtle visual cue for me to stay as close as possible on that course (or quickly adjust it, should the need arise).

It may not sound like a great deal but having that visual reminder right in front or next to me has really helped me stay much more productive on my daily, project- and context-specific to-do’s and also has made my organizational system a regular and effortless part of my daily life. Now, if only getting the entire in-basket to empty was this easy…
